• Dear Parents and Guardians,

The kids will have many opportunities this year to participate in the running and organization of the classroom.  They will help daily with classroom jobs.  We will also spend a great deal of time working on polite and respectful social skills to help our day run smoothly.  In addition, below is a list of other classroom information that may be important to you.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Your child will have snack each day in the classroom. Please send in a nutritious snack with your child each day. This can include veggies, dry cereal, fruit, crackers, pretzels, etc. Water is okay to send in as a drink but, please stay away from things like sports drinks, juice boxes, or soda that tend to spill easily and lead to sticky messes.

Each day after lunch we will have recess to help release some of the energy that students build up during the day. To ensure that each child is able to play safely on the playground please be sure that he/she has sneakers to wear. Also, as the weather becomes colder we will continue to go outside. Please be sure your child comes to school each morning prepared to go outside in windy and snowy weather. On days when the weather does not permit us to go outside we will have recess inside the classroom.

Every few weeks I will be sending home a newsletter to keep you informed about what is going on in our classroom, ask for volunteers, and celebrate success of the students. Please feel free to contact me at any time as well: jast@iroquoiscsd.org or 652-3000, ext. 3042

As a class we will have continuous discussions as to how first graders should act and treat each other. We will come up with a classroom set of rules so together we can determine the qualities that will make our classroom a great place to be. The children will be sitting at “teams” and each team will have many opportunities to earn points for following the rules, being a good friend, etc. At the end of the week the team with the most points will earn a reward (to be determined). Some examples of rewards will be lunch in the classroom, a chance to bring in a show and tell item, a no-homework for a day pass, etc. Consistent poor choices in the classroom will result in a phone call or note home to the parent. In that situation, I will ask that we work together to develop a plan to improve whatever behavior needs support.

Your child’s birthday is an exciting and important event to be recognized at school! We will celebrate it with a snack and birthday song during our regular snack time at school. I will send a note home to you a few days in advance that will remind you to please send in a birthday treat, if you and your child would like to.
