SEL: Social Emotional Learning
Includes the mindsets, skills, attitudes and feelings that help student succeed in school, career and life.
They are often referred to as “soft skills” which have been identified as essential in business and work. Some examples include:
- Self-directed
- Ability to follow directions
- Works well with others
- Good work ethic
Working on improving SEL skills leads to
- Improved classroom behavior
- Better stress management for students
- Feeling included
*These begin with caring adults and a positive culture in the building/classroom*
Similar to our MTSS academic assessments like Aimsweb and I-ready, we will be using Panorama to assess our students SEL abilities. The purpose of which is to determine how best to support the student in honing their academic and SEL skills and practice. Doing so also supports our Student Experience Strategic Goal; specifically Strategic Intent #1 [By 2027, 100% of our students will have access to a high quality Multi-Tiered System of Support [MTSS].
Panorama has multiple categories, each with about 5 questions. It allows schools to identify the categories they wish to assess to support the student and the soft skill growth. Those identified in the Middle School are:
- Self-Management: How well students manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
Sample question: During the past 30 days, how often did you come to class prepared?
- Social Awareness: How well students consider the perspectives of others and empathize with them.
Sample question: During the past 30 days, how carefully did you listen to other people’s points of view?
- Sense of Belonging: How much students feel that they are valued members of the school community.
Sample question: How connected do you feel to the adults at your school?
- School Safety: Perceptions of student physical and psychological safety while at school.
Sample question: How often do you worry about violence at your school?
- Challenging Feelings: How frequently students feel challenging emotions.
Sample question: During the past week, how often did you feel lonely?
At the High School the following categories were chosen to gain information to help students:
- Self-Management: How well students manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
Sample question: During the past 30 days, how often did you come to class prepared?
- Emotion Regulation: How well students regulate their emotions.
Sample question: How often are you able to control your emotions when you need to?
