Board of Education Responsibilities
The Iroquois Board of Education consists of seven community members who are each elected to a five-year term. As our elected representatives and as officers of New York State, the Board must carry out duties imposed by the state's Legislature, Board of Regents, and Commissioner of Education.
The Board of Education does not have the day-to-day responsibilities of running a school district, rather their role is oversight and setting policy; the Superintendent of Schools is responsible for all aspects of the running the district and he/she reports to the Board.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain strong ethical standards.
- To review, revise, and uphold existing policies while also adopting new ones as necessary.
- Develop a budget and present it to the community, aligning district resources to improve academic success.
- Create a shared vision for the future of education.
- Review student achievement outcomes with rigorous accountability.
- Ratify collective bargaining agreements.
- Hire and evaluate the superintendent.
